Workshops

Before COVID-19, our Association held two face-to-face workshops entitled “Protecting your Property from Grand Lake Flooding: Stories from the Trenches”.  The first workshop was held in the Mill Cove Nursing Home on February 22, 2020 and the second was held in the Minto Seniors Hall on February 29, 2020.  There are five slide presentations available.  A brief synopsis of each is as follows:

(a) An introductory slide show “IntroductorySlideShow.pdf” illustrates some of the different approaches used around Grand Lake to protect properties from flood level spring freshets with accompanying wind.

(b) One property owner presented his approach to erosion protection using large shot rock placed on top of industrial landscape fabric; see “Martin’sPresentation.pdf“.  The largest pieces of rock called armour rock were placed on the most susceptible erosion locations, and worked to protect the property shoreline from erosion in 2019.

(c) Brown’s Paving from Sussex presented their solution with “World Block Erosion Prevention Slide Show_Feb.20_2020“.  The Brown’s Paving company make consistently sized interlocking 2 x 2 x 4 foot concrete blocks for erosion protection, and show how these were used in 2018 to repair damage and protect against flooding in 2019.

(d) A property owner presented his approach in “John’s Gabions#2.pdf” with Gabion cages to protect against erosion.  Gabion cages are heavy wire mesh cages constructed on site, then filled with natural rock to provide a heavy, stable wall that dissipates energy from crashing waves without moving.  The Gabion cages worked to protect their home from erosion in the 2019 flood.

(e) Staff from Grand Lake Timber in Chipman presented their approach in “GrandLakeTimberFloodPrep2018_2019.pdf” to protect against the significant threat from flooding at their mill.  They constructed large dirt-filled berms from overlapping tarps to surround areas of their mill operations; these were effective at keeping the floodwaters at bay.

Eurasian Water Milfoil Removal Workshop September 2026One of our focuses was to help people learn to identify EWM from other species. We collected real plants to show, and made a new Milfoil Identification Guide, which you can find on our website (link in bio).EWM was removed by hand by a scuba diver - thank you Skylar! We had planned to use a weight and float system to make plots for removal, but the water was too muddy to see them! The New Brunswick Invasive Species Council did a demonstration with a mobile Boat Decontamination Station. The unit can collect and heat up water on-site, and use a pressurized spray to rid boats of clingy critters. Thank you to Nate, NBISC, and DFO for the demonstration! It is extremely important to keep equipment clean to avoid spreading invasive species. The EWM was collected in burlap bags donated to us by Miltown Roasters. After the event, the sediment was rinsed out and non-target species were removed. The EWM was dried out in the sun over several days, and weighed. In all, we removed about 1.6 pounds of Eurasian Water Milfoil (dry). The event was great, and really highlighted the importance of preventing invasive species from spreading in the first place. Clearing even just a small area is very resource intensive.Further thanks to Wildlife Habitat Canada for funding this endeavor, and to the duck hunting community for making their work possible; to Dieter and Mary for their help engineering the plan; to the Fredericton Yacht Club for their support; to CBC News New Brunswick for allowing us to spread the word about EWM on Information Morning; and to Willow for assisting with the EWM cleaning and weighing process.#eurasianwatermilfoil #invasivespecies #newbrunswick #douglasharbournb #nbisc #nbinvasives #WildlifeHabitatCanada #nature #environment ...
