February 15, 2023

Webinar: Ecosystem recovery from Minto coal mining: a fascinating story

8:00 pm – 9:00 pm
March 2, 2023

When did coal mining start in the Minto, New Brunswick area? What environmental, social and financial impacts has it had over the years? How has the water quality of fresh water runoff from the mine tailing ponds changed over time? Why are the ponds that beautiful aquamarine colour? What are the future plans for ecosystem improvement in the mine tailings areas?

Join us via Zoom webinar on Thursday, March 2, 2023 at 8:00 pm Atlantic time to hear this fascinating story from Peter Dufour. Peter grew up in Minto, and started working for NB Coal Ltd. in 1977. He has unique knowledge and insights into the coal mining operations, and subsequent land reclamation work in Minto. Questions are encouraged, both before the webinar via email (to jemseggrandlakewatershed@gmail.com), and during the webinar itself.

Eurasian Water Milfoil Removal Workshop September 2026One of our focuses was to help people learn to identify EWM from other species. We collected real plants to show, and made a new Milfoil Identification Guide, which you can find on our website (link in bio).EWM was removed by hand by a scuba diver - thank you Skylar! We had planned to use a weight and float system to make plots for removal, but the water was too muddy to see them! The New Brunswick Invasive Species Council did a demonstration with a mobile Boat Decontamination Station. The unit can collect and heat up water on-site, and use a pressurized spray to rid boats of clingy critters. Thank you to Nate, NBISC, and DFO for the demonstration! It is extremely important to keep equipment clean to avoid spreading invasive species. The EWM was collected in burlap bags donated to us by Miltown Roasters. After the event, the sediment was rinsed out and non-target species were removed. The EWM was dried out in the sun over several days, and weighed. In all, we removed about 1.6 pounds of Eurasian Water Milfoil (dry). The event was great, and really highlighted the importance of preventing invasive species from spreading in the first place. Clearing even just a small area is very resource intensive.Further thanks to Wildlife Habitat Canada for funding this endeavor, and to the duck hunting community for making their work possible; to Dieter and Mary for their help engineering the plan; to the Fredericton Yacht Club for their support; to CBC News New Brunswick for allowing us to spread the word about EWM on Information Morning; and to Willow for assisting with the EWM cleaning and weighing process.#eurasianwatermilfoil #invasivespecies #newbrunswick #douglasharbournb #nbisc #nbinvasives #WildlifeHabitatCanada #nature #environment ...
